Runner Beans

request for FREE seeds

(available to amateur growers only  - a donation of £1.90 to help cover my out of pocket P & P costs is requested (regardless of the quantity of beans ordered) or £3.90 for overseas requests

  History & General Information

"These purple podded runner beans are ABSOLUTELY unique. Whilst there are plenty of purple podded French beans available (Phaseolus vulgaris), there are virtually no purple podded runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) in existence. These  runner beans - named Aeron Purple Star - have been bred from a 'Polestar' cross by me (Gwilym) - the chair and founder member of the Aeron Vale Allotments Trust (Registered Charity No. 1166320 )  in Aberaeron, Ceredigion, Wales. They have been trialed for many seasons and have been found to come 'true' by all trailers involved".

Aeron Purple Star is stringless. Pod length on average is between 12  & 14 inches (30 - 35cm) at maturity. They are exceptionally vigorous & the plants grow to about 12 feet (3.7m) in height. The flower colour is bright scarlet. The flavour of the cooked beans exceeds that of it's familial parent Polestar (a previous RHS Award of Garden Merit winner).

The bean seeds are NOT sold commercially. Any allotment growers or veg. gardeners can have a quantity of up to 24 of the bean seeds sent to them at this time for just the cost of packaging and carriage (£1.75 within the UK -  £3.75 overseas)

Quantities are very limited. The maximum number I have available to any one grower this season is 24 beans . They are given out on a 'first come, first served' basis. They can be freely distributed by any amateur grower after saving seeds from their own harvest, the only stipulations I make are that:

  1. any of my beans that are 'gifted' or 'swapped' must retain the name AERON PURPLE STAR

  2. they must NOT be charged for or profited from in any way

  3. any beans passed on with the name 'AERON PURPLE STAR' must NOT be a cross pollinated offspring from any other variety.

I'm VERY SORRY but the surplus

runner bean seeds that I had to share for the 2020/21 season have now all been promised. I'm sorry to disappoint, but if you would like to request some for the 2021/22 season then you're welcome to order them now - by using the on-line request form below.

This season's bean seeds should be ready to be sent out from around the end of October to the  middle of April next year - for next year's planting. It seems that requests are starting to outstrip what I grow for sharing!
